What To Do in a Plumbing Emergency

A plumbing emergency can happen to anyone at any time of day. Homeowners should know what constitutes an emergency and how to deal with it until the plumbing professional can get there. At Indy Renovation, our licensed, insured, and bonded plumbers are one call away in the event of an emergency. Here are a few tips, straight from the professionals, so that you will be able to identify plumbing crises if they arise.

Frozen Pipes

A frozen pipe isn’t an issue you’ll have to deal with in the summer heat, but winters in Indianapolis can be brutal, and many people experience this plumbing crisis. An emergency plumber can help you un-freeze the pipes and insulate them so this doesn’t happen in the future.

Bad Smells

If you smell something foul that you can’t identify coming from your kitchen or bathroom drains, call an emergency plumber. A plumber will be able to figure out the source of the smell and fix it before it becomes a much more serious issue.

Flooding

Flooding can cause extensive damage to your home and is very inconvenient and expensive to repair. Call a plumber at the first sign of flooding to save yourself weeks of potential headache.

Overflowing Toilet

Even if you dispose of toilet paper and waste correctly, all toilets get clogged at some point and can be fixed with a plunger. However, sometimes a plunger does not do the trick, and your toilet can overflow leaving waste-filled water all over your floor. Call a plumber immediately if your toilet is overflowing to avoid the bacteria, mold growth, or water damage that can occur.

Items to Keep on Hand

If you find yourself in a plumbing crisis, it is good to have a few tools on hand to rectify the situation until the plumber can get there

  • Bucket- can be used as an ’emergency plumbing tool holder’ and can also be used to catch water in case you spring a leak
  • Old towels or rags- to clean up spilled water that your bucket didn’t catch
  • Wrenches- a pair of medium-sized slip joint pliers and an adjustable wrench should cover most jobs
  • A multi-bit screwdriver
  • Plunger
  • Duct tape or leak sealing tape- can hold a small leak until the professional can repair it
  • Wire coat hangers- can unclog stubborn clogged toilets, among many other uses
