How to Unclog a Sink Drain

Oh, that dreaded moment when the water in the kitchen sink just won’t go down the drain. Before picking up the phone to call a plumber, try these few tried-and-true methods for unclogging your kitchen sink. If one method doesn’t work or you don’t have the proper supplies, feel free to move on to the next method.

Method 1: Take the plunge.

The plunger isn’t just for the toilet. Your first line of attack against a clogged sink drain is your handy plunger. This Old House recommends, “Partially fill the sink with water, then start plunging. Vigorously work the plunger up and down several times before quickly pulling it off the drain opening. If it’s a double-bowl kitchen sink, stuff a wet rag into one drain opening while you plunge the other one.”

Method 2: Don’t let your sink off the hook.

If you own an auger or pipe snake, it may be time to get it out. WiseBread writer Paul Michael also notes that a straightened out wire coat hanger can work just as well. What you want to do is try to fish out what’s clogging up your drain. After you’ve removed as much debris as you can, run hot water to see if the rest of the clog will flush itself out by running hot water.

Method 3: Send in the cleaning solutions.

You can find many online “recipes” for at-home drain cleaning solutions (usually a baking soda and vinegar concoction), in case you’re wanting to save money or avoid using harsher chemicals. If you prefer, you can also buy a chemical drain cleaner from most grocery or home improvement stores. Follow the directions on the solution carefully to unclog your drain and to stay safe doing it.

Method 4: Call in the reserves—your friendly plumber.

If the above methods just aren’t doing the trick or you are regularly having a clogged drain, you may want to consider calling a plumber.
