How to Remove Hard Water Stains

If you live in central Indiana, you are no stranger to hard water stains. Even after you contact the professional plumbers at Indy Renovation to install your new water conditioner, you could be dealing with those existing hard water stains for weeks. There are many different tricks to removing them, but which actually work? Here are a few tried and true tips on how to remove unsightly hard water stains in some of their most common locations.

Glass

Acidic cleaner is recommended when trying to remove hard water stains on glass, but be very careful. Wear gloves and eye protection, and read the directions on the label of any cleaning product. Keep in mind that you won’t want to use strong acidic cleaners on areas where food might be placed. For these areas, consider a simpler solution, like vinegar or salt water. Both can be effective when scrubbed on hard water spots.

Tile

Common household vinegar is also a remedy for stained tile. Saturate some paper towels with pure white vinegar and place them on the stained areas for at least eight hours. Then remove the paper towels, rinse the area with distilled water, and gently scrub with a non-abrasive cleaning pad.

Marble

The minerals in hard water stains can really build up, becoming easily visible to the eye. If you run your fingers over a stained marble surface and feel a raised bump, that’s the sign of a mineral deposit. These spots can usually be removed with a marble cleaning product and a soft towel. Alternatively, you can use a fine steel wool (grade #0000) to rub out the stain, using a circular motion.

To get rid of hard water stains for good, you’ll need a quality water conditioning system.
