Bathroom Safety

Creating a Safe and Accessible Bathroom

It can be an unpleasant topic, but if you have an aging loved one in your life, eventually you need to discuss long-term plans. If your loved one wants to stay in their own home as they age, it’s important to remember that the bathroom is one of the most dangerous rooms in a home. Falls represent the leading cause of emergency room visits for the elderly, and the conditions in a bathroom are, unfortunately, the perfect storm for falls. However, when seniors can safely and easily use the bathroom on their own, it allows them to age with dignity in their own home. That’s why our team at Indy Renovation believes that designing safe and accessible bathrooms goes a long way in helping your loved one feel independent and safe.

Make Accommodations for Wheelchairs

If you’re able to do a complete bathroom remodel, start by making sure the dimensions of the bathroom accommodate the needs of your loved one. The door should be a minimum of 34 inches wide to accommodate a wheelchair or walker, and instead of doorknobs, install easy-to-reach levers. Then, under the sink, leave 27 inches of clearance to make room for a wheelchair. Keep the top of the sink between 32 and 34 inches from the floor.

Install a Walk-In Bathtub

Walk-in bathtubs are an important tool for aging in place, improving bath safety, and removing some of the barriers that seniors may face while accessing the bathtub. Instead of having to lift their foot 18 inches, our team can lower the lip of their tub until it’s just six inches high, making it much simpler for them to step inside. Converting the bathtub is a great option for those that don’t plan to do a full bathroom remodel.

Don’t Forget Handrails and Shower Seats

Walk-in showers and bathtubs can be equipped with shower rails to help maintain balance while getting in and out of the shower or tub. If your loved one has trouble staying upright while in the shower, we can also install a shower seat.

At Indy Renovation, we believe everyone has the right to age with dignity in their own Central Indiana home. Contact us at today (317) 375-4464 to learn more about our services and to get a free estimate.
