3 Warning Signs of Frozen Pipes

Winter is in full swing here in Indianapolis and we’re seeing temperatures continue to drop daily. With those falling temperatures comes the risk of frozen pipes which, if not caught early, can be one of the most disastrous plumbing emergencies. A frozen pipe leads to a burst pipe, which will cause water to fill the room, leading to water damage, the growth of mold and mildew, and the need for a pipe replacement. At Indy Renovation, we never want to see our clients go through the headache of a burst pipe, so watch out for these warning signs to protect your home.

1. Frost Buildup

Most pipes in your home are hidden from sight; however, there are some pipes that are exposed in the basement, garage, and under the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Pay special attention to these visible pipes and look for any sign of frost building up on them. Even the smallest amount of frost forming on these pipes could mean that the pipe has already started to freeze.

2. A Stinky Sink

If you notice a foul odor coming from your sink, you could have frozen water within the pipe. If the ice is completely blocking the pipe, the odors from within will rise back up into your home. However, these odors don’t always point to frozen pipes, as foul odors will also rise up from pipes suffering from any type of blockage. No matter what the culprit, a professional plumber should be called right away.

3. Obvious Lack of Water

Finally, if any of your faucets aren’t producing water, your pipes are very likely frozen. As soon as you discover that one of your pipes is frozen, check each faucet and fixture in your home to figure out which ones are currently at risk of bursting and call a professional plumber before the conditions worsen.

If your pipes freeze, trust the experts at Indy Renovation. We have the experience required to get your plumbing job done properly. Contact us at (317) 375-4464 to speak with one of our licensed plumbers, and be sure to check out what our happy customers have to say.
