3 Most Common Water Heater Problems

Every appliance in your home will have the occasional problem. Whether it’s caused by normal wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or unforeseen damage, problems are eventually going to creep up on you. Today, at Indy Renovation, we’re discussing the most common problems we see in water heaters in Indianapolis, so you will know when to call us for help.

1. No Hot Water

Of course, the most glaring problem that can happen with a hot water heater is that it stops producing hot water. Often, this problem happens because your energy supply has failed. If your water heater is electric, check to make sure your electricity hasn’t gone out; if it is gas, your gas line may not be functioning correctly. If your energy source is working correctly, the issue may be with the heating element or ignition. Before troubleshooting any of these issues, make sure you are taking safety precautions. And if you aren’t comfortable with troubleshooting, call in a professional right away.

2. Water Is Too Hot

Usually, this issue is easily fixed by adjusting the thermostat. However, it can be a dangerous issue if left unchecked, especially if you have young children in your home. Water that is too hot can lead to burns and can even cause your fixtures to prematurely wear out. If your water is too hot, check your manual to find out where your thermostat is located and turn it down. However, if this doesn’t work, call in a professional to fix the issue before someone gets hurt.

3. Buildup

Finally, sediment, minerals, and bacteria can buildup in your water heater and cause a host of issues. You may experience water with a rusty color or it may be cloudy with a strange odor to it. If the water smells like rotten eggs, it may even be a bacterial contamination in your water heater that is negatively effecting the quality of your water. To prevent these types of buildups in your water heater, you should have your system regularly flushed by a professional.

Often, you can fix minor problems with your water heater yourself; however, it’s important to leave most problems to the professionals. At Indy Renovation, we are experienced with gas and electric, standard and tankless, and offer water heater repair for homes and businesses.
